A large population of our long-term volunteer missionaries are from Adventist colleges and universities around North America. During missions weeks on Adventist university campuses, a common reaction from students is, “You mean, take a whole year off?! Why would I want to do that?” It’s hard for many college students to imagine setting aside plans and career goals and classes for a whole school year to volunteer full time somewhere else in the country, continent, or world. But, as crazy as it sounds, a few hundred college students do it every year. Not only do they bless dozens of mission organizations around the world with their energy and enthusiasm, but they return rich with experience, maturity, service-leadership skills, and stronger faith. Most will be honest with you that it’s not easy. Most of the time it’s the hardest thing they’ve ever done. But it’s worth it.
Below are a few videos from Southern Adventist University and Walla Walla University featuring stories and footage from the eyes of student missionaries. Maybe it will help answer that question of “Why would I want to do that?”
Whether you’re a student or not, there are always opportunities available for long-term mission volunteers!
